Technology Infrastructure Checklist for Ontario Retail Businesses Opening a New Location

Opening a new retail location involves dozens of moving parts. Here's a practical technology infrastructure checklist to make sure your network, cabling, and security cameras are ready on day one.

Opening a new retail location is one of the most exciting and stressful things a business owner can do. There are lease negotiations, fit-out contractors, inventory orders, staff hiring, and marketing to coordinate — and somewhere in that list, technology infrastructure needs to happen. It often gets left too late.

Here's a practical checklist to make sure your network, cabling, and security cameras are ready when you open the doors.

Six Weeks Before Opening: Connectivity Planning

Contact internet service providers operating in your location and get quotes. Don't assume the provider you use at your other locations serves this address — ISP coverage varies significantly even within the same city. Order your internet service as early as possible; provisioning lead times can be 2–4 weeks or longer.

Decide on your network architecture. Will this location connect to your head office via VPN or SD-WAN? What applications will run locally vs in the cloud? What bandwidth do you need?

Four Weeks Before Opening: Cabling

If you're doing a fit-out, your cabling contractor needs to be on-site before the drywall goes up. Identify every location where you'll need a data connection: POS terminals, back-office workstations, printers, IP phones, security cameras, access points, and any other networked devices. Add 20% more drops than you think you need.

Specify Cat6 cabling as a minimum. Ensure your telecommunications room is sized appropriately for your patch panels, switches, and any other active equipment.

Two Weeks Before Opening: Active Equipment

Install and configure your switches, access points, and router. Test every data drop. Configure your Wi-Fi with separate SSIDs for staff and customers, with appropriate security settings for each.

If you're using a centralized management platform for your network, add this location and verify that it's visible from your management dashboard.

One Week Before Opening: Security Cameras

Install and configure your security cameras. Verify coverage at every critical area: entrances, exits, POS areas, stockroom, and loading dock. Test remote access. Verify that footage is recording and that retention settings match your requirements.

Day of Opening: Final Checks

Verify that every networked device is connected and working. Test your POS system end-to-end. Confirm that your security cameras are recording and accessible remotely. Make sure your backup internet connection (if you have one) is configured and tested.
